A computer program could allow users to write letters and numbers on a screen just by thinking about them, according to a new study.

The discovery by scientists in Florida could open the door to a new form of communication for millions of people suffering from neurological diseases or paralysis. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville found that patients could make letters appear on screen just by focusing on that letter when presented with a matrix of symbols. The findings, presented to the American Epilepsy Societys annual meeting, are the first steps towards building a mind-machine interface. The researchers believe that the creation of devices that could be controlled only by the mind such as artificial arms and legs - will help millions of people in the future.
